About Martin Sheils Park

Despite its small size, Martin Sheils park offers useful amenities including two covered picnic tables, a barbecue area, public restrooms with disabled access, open space for ball games, and a convenient water station.

A small plaque in the park reveals a charming history:

This park is named in honour of Mr. Martin Sheils (1896-1988). The son of a Coomera pioneering family of Irish descent, who moved to upper Tallebudgera in 1906.

In 1922, Martin became the mail man and supplier for Burleigh Head. With his wagon driven by a team of horses, he picked up passengers, mail and grocery orders on the way down the valley to the railway station at West Burleigh. Martin continued his carrying business until 1946.

This park is the area where Martin used to water and rest his horses.
